I have a question for the gentleman from JC Works, if he is reading this: can he supply us with any information as to availability of Works kits in the North American Market, specifically the U.S. ? Will they be available through the MINI dealerships ? I'm esp. interested in the future upgrades to the MINI Cooper S. Thanks !

Thumbs up To JC garage

Love your works kit for the Cooper, as do the majority of the members on this site. However, the major stumbling block seems to be the price. We all seem to agree that £2,500 is steep for an extra 15-16 BHP. The general consensus is that the money would be better spent being put towards a Cooper S.

I tend to agree with this and as such have put my name down for a Cooper S. Now that the price of the S has been officially released have you considered lowering the price of the Works kit? I personally would be more inclined to get one for my Cooper if it was in this price range.

Cheers

Maybe we should suggest a whole new forum - Feedback for JCW - then by this time next year everything will be just as we want it and cheap

Hmmmmm....

The words "demand" and "supply" come to mind. While they have people like me wanting the product and prepared to pay for it I guess the price will stay as it is... And I won't be upset if/when the price drops as I will have enjoyed the "early days".

Look to this day, for it is life!

Firstly I would like to thank you for welcoming me to the forum. I will do my best to answer your questions .....

Firstly, if you would like a tour of our East Preston based garage please e-mail Richard De Jong at works@johncooper.co.uk or call 01903 784784.

Regarding the question about the USA market, the answer is YES, John Cooper Works kits will be available from all MINI dealerships in the USA around the Fall/Winter 2002. This will include kits for the MINI Cooper (Manual & CVT) and the Cooper S. I will keep you informed of exact dates.

With reference to the price of the Works Kit, I can not argue with you that a Cooper with the JCW kit falls around the same price range as a Cooper S, however our kit is also available for CVT and we will be producing a Cooper S with 200bhp+. The major factor behind the price of our kits is the enormity of research and development work that has gone into producing a conversion that is not only agreable with BMW but also maintains our reputation as the leading aftermarket tuners for Mini Cooper. So, I'm afraid to say that we will not be lowering the price of our kits.

We have had many enquiries regarding the supply of the exhaust and air filter kit as seperate items. Whilst we have considered this, at this time we can not supply them seperately but this may follow in the future.

I hope this answers your questions for now. Please keep checking the website for the latest news and press releases www.johncooper.co.uk.

Welcome JCW and a question

The availability of JCW conversion "S" models here in the USA has me jumping for joy but also puts me in a dilemma. If I got my "S" prior to the JCW package availability is it a retrofit item? Can I bring my 3 month old "S" to the dealer and say "upgrade please" or do I have to drive the car off the lot as a JCW car?

As I have said before this is my "midlife crisis car", so I can be patient if necessary and I am willing to pay (within reason) for exactly what I want.

It is great to have a rep from JCW with us! I hope we don't wear him out.

Chili Red / Black Roof Cooper "S", delivered Aug 5, 2002.

I'm sure the folks at JCW can answer this better than I, but from doing some rudimentary poking around at their website and checking out the upgrades/packages for sale there, I'm sure you can get a car retrofit if you want. Quoting directly from the page on the JCW site for the UK Cooper conversion:

You may need converting
If you are buying, or indeed have already bought, the new MINI Cooper and would like to give it even better driver feel, throttle response and handling, then the John Cooper Works Conversion is for you - and it's here right now.

You will be converted
The John Cooper Works Conversion comprises a replacement high compression-ratio cylinder head - match-ported, polished and gas flowed, plus a new free-flow air filter system and all-new cat-back stainless steel rear exhaust system. Gas flow efficiency is optimised from entry to exit and this, combined with subtle changes within the electronic engine management system that improve the torque curve, ensures superb driveability across the full engine speed range. Every component is matched and balanced providing a worthwhile increase in power from 115ps up to 132ps, improving through the gears performance and top speed. All this is achieved with minimal degradation of fuel consumption. Above all, the car sounds and feels 'right', living up to the true legend of the Mini Cooper.

Simply come to see us...
Just bring your car down to our new engineering workshops and we will carry out the John Cooper Works Conversion for you. This includes the coveted side and rear chrome and enamel badging and that all-important engine bay plate with unique car conversion number.

...or see your local dealer
Alternatively, if you are unable to get your car to us or would prefer to use your local dealer, that's fine, the John Cooper Works conversion will be available from selected premium partners worldwide. They are fully conversant with the engineering work required and have all the specialist tools and expertise to complete the necessary work for you. However if your conversion is carried out at John Cooper Works, you will have the satisfaction of knowing that you have enjoyed the genuine Cooper experience and the kudos which will accompany your association with our legendary automotive racing organisation.

The Works Conversion is available now fully fitted for £2408.75 (inc. VAT) at John Cooper Works, or supplied to your local dealer for £2056.25 (inc. VAT) plus fitting cost (approx 6hrs labour).

Perhaps I'll have to save a few bucks and maybe have this done to my S (which I don't even have yet) sometime in the spring/summer of 2003...

Just Been

I've just been to the East Preston garages to drool.

I spoke to one of the guys there who was nice and relaxed. He mentioned the S Works (something I'm only marginally interested in....as IF!) and how it should be available in September time. Apparently there is already a back log. He said it should develop...wait for it...some 210 BHP!?!?!

Holy Cremoly! He was all nonchalant about it and there's me trying to keep the big cheesy grin from spreading right across my face.

Other things to note are Jackie Stewart's and Stirling Moss's race cars and an absolutely beautiful original Mini Cooper with everything on it. He said that the car wasn't for sale but if it needed to be recreated then it would probably cost in excess of £30000!! The roof on this car was really special.

He also mentioned that there wouldn't be any issues with taking your Cooper S in to the Cooper Garages after purchase elsewhere and getting the conversion done (even after a few years!)

I hope you guys enjoy your visit when you go. I'm lucky I just live along the road, so I know where my dosh will be going to next year.

Since my dealer says I shouldn't expect to see my Cooper S until September anyway, I wonder if the conversion could be done by JCW themselves before being shipped over to the states..... probably not.

besides, I'd want to drive it both with and without the conversion to get a feel for the difference.
