Offline | JCW Works Exhaust Tips Hey people, this is my first thread on here and any advice would be gratefully received. 1) I picked up my new 170bhp Cooper S (I managed to persuade my dealer to fit the JCW badges and exhaust tips) on July 15th 2004 - No problems.. 2) Few days later I noticed that a strange clunking noise was happening when I was moving from 1st to 2nd etc... And thought that the problem was coming from the exhaust so I telephoned my dealer and was told not to worry and that the noise was a standard feature... 3) A week later this noise was staring to bug me so I decided to have a look up the exhaust pipe... I discovered that where BMW (Main Dealer) had fitted the JCW exhaust tips they had cut the exhaust pipes in a jagged fashion in order to get the tips on... I then telephoned my main dealer to tell them and they informed me that that was the only way to get the tips on the exhaust... 4) I then decide to telephone John Cooper Garages and give them all the details of the car and ask them if any cutting of the original pipes is needed to fit the Wrks tips on the exhaust.... I am told "No cutting is needed as the JCW exhaust is bigger than the standard exhaust" .... 5) By now the strange noise which is starting to sound like a miss-fire or back-fire is getting louder and louder and is happening more frequently... I take the car into the main dealer as I cannot stand this anymore and am told.. "Oh.. Well we shouldn’t have fitted the tips to the car and will give you a new exhaust butt will not fit the tips... as for the noise we don’t know.." 6) Has anyone experienced this strange noise with their car? And knows what the solution is? 7) Does anyone know the dimensions of the Cooper S Wrks Exhaust for the 2003 & 2004 model? And if it is actually smaller than the 170bhp Cooper S? |

Offline | What was your dealer thinking?? Trying to fit the exhaust tips to a standard S exhaust Firstly I amazed they would chop up a JCW exhaust just for the tips and secondly I can't imagine why on earth they would agree to attach them to the standard exhaust. Sounds strange to me. |

Offline | JCW Works Exhaust Tips Thanks for the reply fevs but has your clunk been getting louder? mine is now doing it just from reving the car..... i visited my main dealer again today and they have looked at the car and did a diagnostic check which showed no problems but have said that the clunking isnt sposed to happen. BMW have also said that once my exhaust has been changed they think it will stop the problem but if the clunk remians they will contact MINI UK and look further into the problem.... Maybe it would be an idea if you visited your main dealer and asked them.. just to see if they give you the same advice they gave me... ![]() |

Offline | Grings - I asked my main dealer if they could fit the tips to the standard exhaust as i liked the design better than the standard end tips... The main dealer assured me that fitting these would not be a problem as they just replaced the exisiting tips... A JCW exhaust was not sacrificed for this as you can order the tips as a replacement... just in case one drops of or is nicked... |

Offline | That answers it then!! Like Aiden said JC are usually very protective of their kit, the fact that you need a chassis number ot buy 'S' unique bits (fuel cap etc) would suggest that 'spare' bits for JCW cars whould be like hens teeth. I honest though the tips were welded onto the exhaust pipes - you learn something new every day. |

Offline | My 04 MCS has the same clunk. It's in the shop right now getting a new transmission as the tech diagnosed it as a bad 1-2 synchro. The demo cars that I test drove did not clunk. I'd pursue it and have it checked more thoroughly. His - 04 CR/W MCS Hers - 05 BEP/W MCS |

Offline | Cory B - Thanks man... Did your 04' have the clunk when the car was stationery and with just reving the car? Did your clunk sound like it was coming from the exhaust? only mine sounds like some sort of Del-Boy backfire but only not as loud... |

![]() Nice TTs......... | That was a rough cutting job.............. ![]() The tips look to stick out a little too much also imo........... ![]() I think the point is, they come attached to a new exhaust with the kit, so welding them on to a standard exhaust might not necessarily be a success as seen? ![]() ![]() Global Moderator |

Offline | I only had the noise when driving and it was more pronounced if I shifted at higher rpm. The clunk was definately from the shifter/transmission. At first I thought it might have been a bad linkage bushing, but the tech was quite sure it came from the transmission. I have the burble/pop when letting off the accelerator pedal. I actually enjoy that sound though. His - 04 CR/W MCS Hers - 05 BEP/W MCS |
