warranty service question

Hello,

I have a 2005 cooper s and last week it had it's first oil service at 9400 miles. The service indicator on the speedometer was consistent with what the dealer/manual have told me, which is that the oil needs to be changed every 10k miles. All well and good.

Now, I'm not at all convinced that my local mini dealers service department is what I would call good. They do the work, for sure, and in the end they do it right, but every time I've needed to have my car serviced I've had to fight them in one way or another to live up to their end of the bargain.

When I got my car back from the oil service, the service indicatore was set for not another 10k miles as I expected, but for 15,500 miles, and it reads "inspection", not "service". Due to my belief that my service department doesn't like to actually do the work of servicing cars unless forced, I'm suspicious that they're trying to push my next service back. Being that I already believe 10k miles between oil changes seems excessive, another 5k just pushes me over the edge.

Anyone else had this experience with their dealer? Anybody else in the know that can confirm or dispel my suspicions? Details?

As always, thanks in advance.

My understanding of it is that when the dealer re-sets it,the miles to next service is automatically set.

I may be wrong but I'm sure someone will be along soon to let us both know

After the initial 10K oil change service, the inspections are done at 15K intervals.

After my 10K oil change service, my service interval counter read 15,500 also.

Just do an oil change midway to the inspection

It's a service, inspection 1, service, inspection 2. This is then repeated indefinitely. The
15,500 is normal and is a first guess at the mileage. As your actual driving is taken into
account this comes down until 0 ready for the inspection1. This may not be in 15,500
miles time. Let the computer do the calculations. Fixed mileage servicing is going the
way of distributors and one coil shared between all the spark plugs. Obsolete .

Some people are like a Slinky ........ not really good for anything, but you still can't help
but smile when you shove them down the stairs

Your dealer is right. Most modern built cars don't need servicing as often as older ones did.. so, having a 25k first proper service is fairly standard. The reason the first oil service is after a relatively short mileage is because a new car will usually deposit 'gunk' into the oil within the first 10000 miles or so. Any minor imperfections in the pistons etc. will be smoothed off.. and the excess crap ends up in the oil. Hope this makes sense!

Steve is right also,.. your first major service mightn't actually be at 25500 miles.. most probably earlier.. if you do a lot of city driving..

The countdown clock to next inspection will also count down quicker if you are driving all town miles instead of motorway as more stop/starts more breaking more gear changing so more ware and tare. I wasn't aware of this untill I asked my dealer. Q. why was the countdown indicator showing 15500 miles to next service after my last service but I only actually drove 13500 before countdown said service due.

On the road again.
