chips away?

chips away help
lots of minor scratches on my hyper blue mini mcs + bonnet dent/paint chip
chips away quoted £120 or so, if i sort cooper stripes myself, [vinyl cutter at work so no prob]
tried scratch x with little effect,
as the bonnet fix is £70.00 and as dent is on stripes, thinking i might try diy for this bit as vinyl will cover repair so no paint to match, am i daft to try diy
should i buy a sander/polisher and try scratches as well
i could practice on wife's motor [ MR2 roadster black with lots of scratches] or is this the path to a whole world of pain

should i just pay the man, and stand well back?

Its completely up to you if you were goin to try and hand polish/ machine polish all the scratches out then you will need to do some reading up on it ,as it can be a whole world off pain or you could end up doin a good job!

ive bought a machine polisher and it was a good job done in the end!

A good machine polisher with pads and polish will come close to or even alot more than £70 depending on which one you get.

if you are not that fussy about the dent when its covererd by the stripe then do that, if its going to play on your mind afterwards then get them to sort it professionally!

Sounds like you might need to review your washing regime? if both your MINI and your wifes MR2 are covered in scratches. Just general care and not putting the car through an automated car wash should ensure it remains scratch free

I would, if you screw it up, it could cost a lot more than £70

sadly correct part of the damage on my car was self inflicted,
at pay as you go washer with hose from pressure lance which must been contaminated [always take my own brush and cloths]
wife works on a building site [not as hod carrier] so car is aways plastered in rubbish
have noticed that the MR2 has a much thicker/better quality paint which i feel i could attack with a polishing machine with some confidence

Trust me the MINI paint is harder than the MR2. BMW paint is the hardest paint you can have to polish.

If you want to know how to polish your car properly visit Detailing World they will recommend the Porter Cable random orbit polisher as it's hard to do damage with a random orbit. Trouble is they need to be imported from America (that's what I did).

Chips away rarely give good result on paint chips and it's better off going to a bodyshop TBH. Plenty of threads on here and Detailing World about them.

It was acceptable in the 80's
