Velvet Cooper removal of bonnet stripes

Hello Everyone,
I'm new to this forum and so here is my question.

I've just purchased a used 2003 Mini Cooper S.
Its great, though I'm not happy with the white stripes on the front of the bonnet. I'd like to remove the stripes from the bonnet.

Has anyone removed their stripes form the bonnet ?
If so, is it a simple procedure or should I bring it to the mini dealer for them to remove.

thanks for reading.

Hi,
if they are vinyl, you should be able to do it yourself.
Just look at the edge and see if you can peel it up.
To make things simpler, you might want to let it sit in the sun, or else use a hair dryer to warm things up as you go.

Any adhesive still left can be removed with a product like GooBGone, or detailing clay.

I think a Cooper looks best with some personalisation... go find what is best for you!

enjoy

I'm not speeding. I'm feeding my supercharger.

I removed the stripes from my car last weekend. They didnt seem original to me as they were in two parts, a white base to make the side stripe with black middles...they were in poor condition and really pitted.

I have since installed an centre stripe up the bonnet and over the roof.

My problem however is the fact that the paint underneath the old stripes is different now, newer, shinier and darker!! it's just visable. plus where the white border vinyl was there is a darkend band of paint like it's been stained!!?

Will it buff out? Will it age? Do I pretend it's not there and re-install the bonnet stripes?

Any ideas? I can attach a picture. P.S it's an 05 Dark Silver Cooper S.

Shut up and Race!

yes, i think I will also be removing my dual stripes as well soon. We have a lane where we live and people instantly think I am a boy racer and wont reverse for me !! - It does my head in. They have only been on the car for a couple of months. But they covered my stone chip

Has had too many minis

Hello,

I've recently removed all my stripes - front, rear and both sides. They have been on the car for two to three years. The vinyl is by 3M and all the stripes were from cooperflags back in 2005.

The method I used successfully is:
  • wipe clean the stripes you're removing
  • run an extension lead to the car for a hairdryer
  • warm the vinyl stripe that you're peeling back, to make it more maleable
  • patiently and steadily pull back the vinyl
  • if traces of adhesive remains, use "Sitcky Stuff Remover": apply for a few minutes, then scrape off debris with something plastic, eg. ice scraper, kitchen spatula or credit card
  • wipe/wash clean with water

All done! Wax if you can

The Sticky Stuff Remover I used was from the local ironmongers and branded De Solve It

yep just warm them up to soften the vinyl and peel them off.

Clean the paint as described in most of the above.

eek! that will scratch the paint.
I agree with the above list (although not the part in bold). I suggest using Autoglym Intensive Tar Remover on a microfibre, that will remove any residue.
