To take the interior door panel off:

1) Undo the three philips screws that go through the interior door panel in the visible holes around the door handle moulding.
2) Prise off the reflector from the rear end of the door panel using a screwdriver. This will expose a fourth fixing screw that you can take out.
3) Prise off the plastic trim that goes around the small speaker and the interior door latch handle
4) Try to get a grip on the bottom edge of the door panel to pull it away from the clips and work your way around until they are all loosened.
5) Pull the top edge of the door panel away from the door glass to unclip it.

Once you have the interior panel off you can gain access into the door. The lock unit is attached to the door by the 3 torx screws (can't remember what size) that are visible from the rear facing edge of the door around the lock mechanism. You will need to disconnect the wiring loom connector and two mechanical cables from the lock unit before you can take it out.

With some care it is possible to get the lock unit out and then refit it past the rear window winder channel, however it may be easier if you loosen the fixings for this at the bottom of the door but be aware that the glass position may need to be readjusted afterwards if you do this (someone else may be able to comment on this).

I bought a new lock unit from Ebay for £40, I guess the dealer price will be much higher as I remember a similar unit for my Mk4 Golf cost over £70.

Hope this helps

Chris
