cleaning exhaust

hey there

just wondered if anyone had any tips for cleaning exhaust on my cooper s? ive noticed its gettin a little black around the lip and would be grateful for any advice.

also ive started to use super unleaded, what a difference! the car feels much quicker, dont know if its a placebo but i think it makes a big difference, not to mention better for the car

Autosol + elbow grease = shiney Milltek

When I'm really bored I do the inside of the exhaust with wire wool

Used to use Autosol and Autoglym (Autosol being better at removing stubborn grime) but Meguiars All Metal Polysh (their spelling) gets the same result with a little less effort and leaves behind a finish that stops the dirt sticking so hard next time.

It was acceptable in the 80's

Will the Megs Polysh get the existing carbon off..or will it just keep clean exhausts clean?

Petrol for the inside metal polish and lots of elbow grease for the outside.

I've even considered dropping the exhaust slightly to reach the tail pipes better.. or removing the rear bumper? don't know which would be easier

With work the Megs polysh will remove everything. If they are particuarly stubborn deposits the get some very fine grade wire wool and work that with the polish.

I use brasso for my exhaust tips, seems to work a treat-although I not done it for a long time and it has built up somewhat...

I use that for the tips on all kinds of cars, never had any problems aslong as you don't leave it on too long....

It will remove pretty much all deposits on the exhaust.
