Cleaning advice - 1st mini!

Hi everyone

Just become the proud owner of a brand new mini, and would welcome advice (in words of one syllable please ) as to recommendations for cleaning, polishing and waxing the car.

I have to be honest and say up till now car cleaning hasnt come high on my agenda of things to do, but my wee car is such a beauty I want to look after it and keep it looking at its best.

I've read through some previous posts, and quite honestly was baffled by the amount of products, and various thoughts put forward. So, bearing in mind I'm a novice here, can I have some help please?

cheers,
Jtp

Welcome to MINI2!

Right, first off, never, under any circumstances, run your car through a carwash. Ever.

Number two, don't let the dealership wash your car for you.

To get the best shine, use Autoglym super resin polish. Then, after using this and buffing the car, apply a thin smear of Autoglym extra gloss protection. Leave it to dry for 40 minutes or so, and then wipe it off.

Hello and welcome to MINI2......

Fisrt off all you really need to know what causes premature ageing of cars paintwork and what causes them, so in this case you need to look at a good wash technique and there is a place called Detailing World that ill direct you to instead of me re-typing it all lol.

A good wash technique.... Good Washing Technique - Detailing World

doing this will hepl prolong your paints finish and prevent, swirls, scratches and marrying.

Ive got this guide hear that will help you long term....

As the car is brand spankers you want to look at keeping it that way before any swirls apear on there, so, applying a glaze, seal and wax will help do this and will make the car easier to wash each time

The glaze i use is Meguiars #7 Show Car Glaze, the Seal i use is Poorboys EX-P Sealent and the wax i use is Poorboys Nattys Blue Wax.

when people dont look after the car in the first place thats when youneed paint correction and the need of polishes and fillers.

And dont get mixed up like most people do,

A Polish Has abrasives in it and takes a minor amount of the clear coat (laquer) away each time to reduce scatches and swirls

A Wax is applied after a polish and adds protection to the cars paint.

All this can be read on the great place of Detailing world

Detailing World - A world for detailers by detailers.

2 very good points there that i do swear by listen to them lol.

But unless the car isnt brand spankes, Autoglym Super Resin Polish ASRP is not need as this is a polish and has abrasives in, the Extra Gloss Protection will be a good starting point followed by a good wax.

Ohh and never use sponges, water drying blades, only good quality microfibre cloths, wash mitts etc etc.

Remember you get what you pay for, if you see a cloth you want to buy, rub it along a new blank CD surface and see if it scratches the surface if it does DONT USE IT.

EGP is a sealent this will do a similar job but if this was me i would definately use a carnubra based wax on top.

All them products are fine TBH, i dont use many off them anymore as ive moved on to other products to trial and see what i like but as my cleaning range is in the £400 area i have alot of products.

The one i rate highly recently is Autogly leather cleaner and Leather Conditioner. Top products IMO.

Thanks for all the advice here, can I ask re: -

The glaze i use is Meguiars #7 Show Car Glaze, the Seal i use is Poorboys EX-P Sealent and the wax i use is Poorboys Nattys Blue Wax. - WHERE CAN THESE PRODUCTS BE PURCHASED?

and also re:

IS IT IN PLACE OF THE SEALANT?

I did say I was a novice :-)....cheers folks, JTP

You cant get these things from good old Halfrauds but online with very good service and fast delivery from.....

Show n Shine - Win Free Detailing Products!

Clean and Shiny Store (Powered by CubeCart)

Super Resin Polish should NOT be used as this has very slight abrasives in there, unless you can see swirls like cobb webbing in bright light then its not needed,

I would start with a Glaze Sealent and Wax.

For example

Glaze = Meguiars #7 show car glaze
Sealent = Poorboys EX-P Sealent
Wax= Poorboys Natty's Blue Wax

You can alsoget all of these on ebay, i always look for the postage amount and see were it is cheaper.

Oh, and just a final thought - how often should I do all of these steps? i.e. if I wash the car once/twice per week do I also use glaze, sealant, wax every time?

cheers,

You can use these products as much as you want but i would say, once you have glazed seald and waxed, then that should be good for 2 weeks then maybe another coat of wax, then 2 weeks later do the lot again, glaze seal and wax.

Remember the more you do it the more chance of getting swirls is,

A few do's and donts

Do's - Use 2 buckets, one with car shampoo in, one with clean water in.... wash a panel at a time rinse in the clean water then dip in the shampoo, panel, rinse, shampoo, panel, rinse and shampoo.

Use a wash mitt NOT a sponge,

Donts - use a sponge, use a water drying blade, use anything that has been dropped on the floor, wash in direct sunlight if you can help....

Many other things but cant think lol!
