Smile GearBox Issue / Thrust Bearing

Hi Guys / Ladies

We have an issue with our gearbox - Our BMW Dealer want's £2,800 to replace the Gearbox !
They mentioned something about a "Lathe" ! - Im not sure what this is ? Forgive my Ignorance.

Whats the Best route to get this matter resolved as £2,800 is crazy money !
Surely there must be better options for less money ?

Is there any options out there e.g :

1. A Specialist who can rebuild the GearBox

2. Or a New Gearbox which is more specific to a car with 235bhp ? But at what price ?

Thanks for any help on this

I would replace it with a late model gearbox from a breakers, and save a lot of money!!
It is unusual for a gearbox on the S to fail,so establish exactly what caused the failure,so as not to repeat the exercise !!

How much????? Oh wait... its it an CVT Automatic?? otherwise the scrap yard or recon gearbox company and I wouldnt expect much more than a 1/3 of that price. Then find a half decent garage to fit for maybe £300 or so cash in palms.

I've only ever had to replace the gearbox on one car before and that was a recon unit I sourced for 1/4 the retail price and fitted for only £150.

Like above, investigate the cause and exactly what is wrong with the box first as sometimes there is a cheaper fix than just a whole new box.
