Offline | Clicking/ticking noise (from engine?) Hi, I'm new to this discussion board, but I could really do with some help, if anyone can. I've looked through all the recent posts, but can't see anything similar. Our Mini Cooper has developed a loud tinny clicking/ticking(?) noise coming from the front of the car (engine?) that starts when the engine has warmed up and the rev count is greater than about 2500 rpm. It sounds sort of like 'ticka ticka ticka', that speeds up when the revs go up, but there are other, more subtle, noises going on there as well - I can't really describe them all my memory. We've just had our power steering pump changed (at great expense), and we mentioned this noise to them as well, but we don't think that they can have done anything about it, as it still sounds the same as before! Does anybody recognise this noise, or can anybody give me some advise as to what to do? I don't really want to go back to the garage again without some advise, as the last bill was £1300! Thanks. |

Offline | Hi, I assume your car is an R53 version (it must be out of warranty to get a bill like that)? Well i have an R56 Mini one - and i a getting the same issue. From when i start the car, after a long journey the ticking remains. I did a little test in the drive. I wound the window down, heard the ticking, turned the wheel to see if it stopped - it didnt. I put the clutch in and voila!!!! it went away, i let the clutch back out, and sure enough the click was there. I can only think its something to do with the clutches. And since its on a R53 (i assume) and R56, it can only be normal and nothing to worry about, or BMW would have fixed it by now. Try my little test and see what happens. If it doesnt stop when you put the clutch in - take it to the dealer and complain. I am gonna wait a few weeks and if it gets worse, its going back!!! Hope this helps... Rob |

Offline | hi there, seen this issue a few times, however it may or may not be a fault! The issue you decribed sounds like the hydraulic tapits, they do have a slight chatter to them - just a normal noise and common on most MINI's. Have you checked your oil levels??? just make sure its running with a good amount of juice in there! regards jimmy |

Offline | Thanks to both of you for your suggestions. In answer to your questions, we topped up the oil and it still made the noise, so we took it back to Vines, and they say that it's the bearings in the engine - the whole engine needs to be replaced, and it's going to cost over £3000 to do it!! I'm really annoyed, as the car has just come out of warranty. We've also just payed £1300 to get the hydraulic pump replaced. It's a disaster area, that car - it's worth absolutely nothing now ![]() |

Offline | I've just listened to Chilli21's video of a 'ticking' Mini on another thread, and have read all similar posts. Mine is totally different to that - it's a far slower sound. More like two 'tickas' a second - Chilli21's tick is 'tictictictictic' really fast! I'm not convinced about the bearings story though... |

Offline | Get a second opinion for sure. You could also see if BMW would give you a 'good will' repair where they pay for some of the repair. It depends on how far out of warrenty your car is though. They gave me a 'good will' repair and the car was about 8 months out of warrenty. Get that second opinion 1st though! |
