To Wax Or Not?

I have been using Autoglym Super Resin Polish and then finish off with AutoGlym Gloss Protection every 3 months or so. Should I be waxing as well between these applications and if so how often?

I ask because I have bought some Turtle Wax Original Hard Shell Shine Car Wax (Is it any good?) and the instructions talks about removing grime, tar etc. I thought that was the job of the polish not wax

I don't think you can ever wax enough but personally I never use the likes of Autoglym and Meguires etc that contain abrasives. I find Harly Carnauba wax about the best there is and as its a natural product kinda to the paintwork. I usually do this about every 3 or 4 months and the water etc always sheets off the car.

As I understand it...

(i) Autogylm Super Resin Polish: although it is the least abrasive polish, it should really only be used every six months or so. But if you have been using it more regularly up until now (e.g. once every two weeks), you won't really have done any harm to the car's paintwork as Super Resin Polish has is not very abrasive.

(ii) Autoglymn Extra Gloss Protection: This can be used as often as you like as it really only puts a protective layer over the Super Resin Polish. Extra Gloss Protection is really like a wax, although some people (who have far too much time on their hands!) also apply wax over the Extra Gloss Protection.

The autoglyn has a fair amount of fillers in it so it reduces the appearance of awirls, most people say its good, and often overlooked in favour of more exotic products.
As with all polishes they take a small amount of paint as they have an abrasive in them,so you shouldnt use too often, maybe 2 or 3 times a year.
What you should do is protect your newly polished surface with wax.......the worlds your oyster ,and beware there are more opinions than products .Whatever you choose will be fine and the wax will sheet the water of the car and offer protection against the elements.

Have a look at the Polished Bliss web site they have a number of very good guides on how to detail a car Car Care and Detailing Services, Products and Advice

Thanks for the responses. It looks like best regime is:

Super Resin Polish 2 / 3 times a year

Extra Gloss Protection or Wax as often as you can. I only has time to do the black roof yesterday and not the whole car and the results where amazing with the Polish + Gloss Protection.

Will try Turte Wax next wash and compare results.

The Detailing World stuff is really compreshensive but could see cleaning the car becoming a full timer if not careful

Dont forget, Some of the guys on detailing world are serious detailers! and it can get VERY expensive & time consuming.

If you are like me, your are a keen motorist who likes his car looking sweet without stupid amounts of time! so...

What I do is this... (basically)

Clay (if needed)
Wash (using wash mit, decent wash additive)
Dry (Miracle drying towel, NOT chamois)

Polish (2/3 times a year) with AG SRP or Clearkote Vanilla Moose Wax)
Seal After Polish (AG EGP or Clearkote Yellow Moose glaze)

Wax X2 every 3/4 weeks (P21S, Nattys Blue, Victoriawax)

Then just use quick detailer for in between.

this keeps the car looking sweet, and dont forget, its in the technique! and sometimes less is more!

the results...

I'd add 2 other things if you can use a hose to wet the car all over and under arches, try to get off as much as you can with the hose.
The second thing is always use two buckets one for the shampoo mix and the other to rinse your wash mit between each application of the shampoo, you should find that the water in the shampoo bucket remains clean ,even at the end of the wash and as a result you'll not have dragged as many fine particles over the car which cause the swirls, then rinse it off with the hose (preferably remove the hose end attachment and let the water sheet over the car to remove any last trace of particles) and then dry etc etc
