Petrol Stations ripping us off for Permium?

Could it be Petrol stations are ripping off customers by selling nomal unleaded through superUnleaded pumps?

How could a customer tell ?

The reason i bring this up, is that generally on this forum people recommend Vpower. BUT!

At my local Esso station £111/ltr, Vpower noticably dulls the performance and responce of my MCS compared with TESCO 99 or BT Ultimate, both of which make the MCS purr. ( pop and BANG!)

Or am I being a Grumpy Old Man ?

That would be hightly illegal under the trades description act and if they were they could be in for a big fine - personally something i dont think they would risk doing.

A Shell local to me boasts stickers on it's forecourts that they are regularly checked by Cheshire trading standards, but I think this is for accuracy of volume dispensed by the pumps.

I knew a lad that worked in a Shell garage, he often told me that when a tank would run dry and wasn't transferred across, it would suck up all the dirty petrol from the bottom (slightly off topic)

I guess we can't all trust franchised shell and BP garages, as they allow to criminal gangs to operate credit card fraud within them, so it wouldn't at all surprise me if the they did mess up or purposely dispense lower grade petrol through higher grade pumps!

Interesting comments... I am here only talking about 1 particular garage that my experiences are being based arround. Several times ive used it for VPower, and been dissapointed every time. Not so BP or Tesco.. . . As i cant prove anyting, im not going to start finging mud. BUT if anyone does know of a quick test, then we as consumers may get somewhere.

Hi there,

I have just started a thread asking about the octane rating that should be used in a MCS.
http://www.mini2.com/forum/mini-coop...-s-o2-r53.html

I have had a similar experience to 3rdpillar in that my bog standard 02 MCS seems to run better on a lower octane fuel.

In my case I was using Ultimate 98 and saw a noticeable improvement in using Shell Premium (95 octane) instead. The MCS seems more responsive and doesn't bog down as it sometimes did with 98.

I can only put it down to the additives used in the higher octane fuels. I think they slow the flame, in other words not as intense an explosion.

Cheers,

Dave

Do you buy fuel from a busy petrol station or a little place in the sticks? I've bought fuel in the past from a country filling station and my car felt rough within minutes of driving away. I put it down to the fact that they probably didn't shift particularly large quantities of super so it had gone stale.

I've been buying Ultimate 98 from a busy site, however not sure how many customers actually buy the more expensive fuels, especially considering the cost of fuel these days.

It could be that Ultimate is sitting in the tanks for a long period; however chances are that I would have filled up shortly after a delivery at least once but I have never noticed any difference.
