Mobil 1 0W40 in R53 MCS?

I have read the posts I could find on the topic, still undecided. This looks like the best oil Mobil is producing. I know Mini specifies 5W30 - simple question without a lot of explanation - is Mobil 1 0W40 adviseable? I live in a warm to hot country so the 0W is not the issue. Wonder what Chrysler specified for the Tritec engine?

Using the wrong oil can be almost as bad as using none at all . Here in Britain we use 0W30, becauce it's a verid climate. In your country you could still use 0W30, but you don't really need the 0W part. For you 5W30 is perfect . But what ever you do, don't use 0W40 . It will be TOO think when the engine is up to operating temperature.

Who makes the oil isn't important, but the grade of it is. If you can't by Mobile oil in a 5W30 grade, then buy another brand that does .

I once topped my oil up with 5W 40 but had no probs....was this a bad thing? ...due an insp2 service in 750 miles anyway

0W40 is thinner than 5W30 at cold temperatures (the 0 in 0W40), but it's thicker (more viscous) at

Mobil1 0w40 is fab

I use Mobil1 0w40 in my '04 MCS. I have a daily commute of more than 60mi (~100km) on Los Angeles freeways. As has been pointed out elsewhere, the supercharged 1.6l four-banger runs HOT, and I appreciate the extra margin of protection that the 40-weight oil provides.

It's the first I've heard of it. The turbocharged engine has been reported as producing a lot of heat, but not the supercharged one

Not sure why the turbo would differ from the supercharged. Forced induction creates compression creates heat. Randy Webb points out on his site that heat soak is crucial with the MCS engine. That's probably a more precise way of stating things than "the sucker runs hot."

Naturally forced induction creates heat, that is why it has an intercooler to cool the inlet charge before it enters the combustion chamber. The downside of the top mounted intercooler is that, as it sits directly on top of the engine, it actually heats the inlet charge still further if the car is stuck in traffic and there is no cooling air flow. That's what my understanding of what is meant by heat soak.

This is a byproduct of any supercahrged car with a top mounted air to air intercooler and should not (with the greatest respect) be confused with thinking that the engine is running hot.

Point taken. (No offense taken, BTW. Some folks around are entirely too thin-skinned.) I drove an '87 MR2 for 20 years, and it seems that the blast of engine heat from my '04 MCS when I pop the bonnet is greater despite its front-mounted engine getting more direct airflow than the mid-engined MR2. Possibly due to the heat-soaked intercooler?

If I lived someplace that actually got cold, I might stay with 5W30 (or change weight seasonally). But for driving relatively long hauls in the L.A. desert with a busy little engine, I'll go with the 0W40's thicker film and live with the miniscule loss in performance relative to 5W30. (I haven't heard of the Tritec engine having tight oil galleries, so I don't imagine the higher vis would be a problem in that regard.)
