Angry Alloy Wheel Damaged

Im so annoyed only had my mini for a couple of weeks and yesterday I had to go down a very tight one way street (only enough room for a car and a half) and I had to ride the kurb to get around this stupidly parked wreck of a car (wing mirrors smashed, generally mistreated), in the process managed to scrape the entire outer rim of my front passenger side alloy wheel.

I was SO ANNOYED, the alloys were in mint condition, either the previous owner had more luck than me or the mini dealership made sure they were in top condition before selling it. Either way Im pretty upset about it!

How much would a dealership charge for repairs? Or would it be easier just to buy a replacement, and keep that one as a spare?

How bad is the damage?

Someone like chips away might be able to do a smart repair on it A dealer will no doubt charge you more, and im sure ive been told (and what we quote at work - not MINI) is about £50 a wheel, depends whats happened to it though

You can get it refurbsihed, I know the Mini dealer I bought my Cooper from had the wheels refurbed. Just Google for "wheel refurb". I would expect it would only cost you about £50 to have done

This pic shows a section of the damage

Hopefully I can get this sorted when I go back to the dealership sometime this week.

Google a company called 'Automotive repair Systems'. We use them at work and they are excellent

Thanks, Just Looked them up on google, looks fairly impressive, any idea of the costs? And would it be a case of me going to them or is it a mobile service?

Nope, they are totally mobile. I'm pretty sure it'll be sub £50 to sort that - best to ask just in case!

You can either use one of specialist firms like Chips Away, or you use a DIY kit from Halfords depending on how bad the damage is. Either way you need to have the wheel balanced afterwards.

That is nothing at all!

I lightly kerbed my alloy a couple of months ago parking in a street in London, which was narrow, with high kerbs. Could have kicked myself

Then....last week was parking on a busy road in Manchester, with a really low kerb, and have scraped the alloy really badly - Luckily it was the same wheel, in the same place - but, in my defence to myself, the space was teeny, and the kerb was at a funny angle, and the road was really busy so had to be quick

Still very annoying tho!

Might be cheaper to get some unmarked replacements off ebay.

i would use a company called paintmaster. they are all over the uk and are the best.
they are the only company i could find to do my shadow chrome wheels and have done a brilliant job and only charged £60 for shadow chrome.
think they charge around £35 - £40 a wheel for silver and will be able to do yours no probs

Lot cheaper than buying a new wheel.

Dont use a smart repair

If you want a decent repair you need the wheel completely stripping and then refinishing otherwise the wheel will be worse in six months or so.
I know for a fact that if you take it to mini it may seem good when you get it done but all it is is a bodged filler job and it wont last.
you must use someone like this company as they shot blast the wheel to strip etc

Well Ive got my mini back from the dealership today looks very impressive, there is a slight mark on alloy that wasnt there before, but where it was damaged badly on the outer rim (see pic above on earlier post) its fine. So are you saying that this wont last and is only a temporary filler?

I must just say the service I received there today was very good, and thats why I like dealing with the dealerships, yes it may cost more, but you feel like your looked after there and makes you want to go back.

I will be suprised if it lasts

Yes what i was saying is that mini do quick repairs they don't fully refurbish the wheel like a wheel refurbishment company.
The full refurbishment needs to be done to the wheel otherwise in a few months the wheel lacquer will begin to peel of where it was damaged as it has just been filled over where the damage was and then touched up. This means that the filler does no bond to the wheel properly and also the same with the lacquer.

Hi - well I know a lot of people quote '£50' a wheel - but this actually comes to about £70 a wheel once you include VAT and a few years inflation! Sorry - not trying to be pedantic!

Your Mini dealership will have re-furbed the wheels before you bought the car - they generally do it for all cars - simply because of the difference it makes on the forecourt.

A good place to use is Spit n' Polish in Tonbridge - and also some BMW dealerships will do it for the same price. OR as someone else said - ebay. I needed to do 3 of my wheels (after 4 years in London!) and managed to find a complete set of wheels on Ebay at local BMW dealership who were clearing out stock. Got them for less than the refurb was going to cost and then sold my old set for £150.

Don't forget the wheel balancing on top.

I have got a set of 17'' Bullets and the profile of the run flat makes scuffing (no matter how careful) inevitable over time. If you can live with the damage in the short term wait till you need some new tyres and buy a new wheel from BMW at the same time. The cost of a replacement 17'' Bullet is £119 + Vat which is not that much and you get the advantage of the wheel being balanced free as part of the tyre replace and no hassles if the rim is damaged during the fit.

Might sound extravagant but you get a brand new wheel not a patched one and any refurbish work done on a wheel invalidates the warranty.

I hate kerbs.

I am really angry now. My wife kerbed the wheels on her mini last week and this week i took massive chunks out of 2 wheels on my £39,000 audi a4. any idea where i can get them fixed. I hear that they have to refinish them after a refurb, will they match the other wheels or will i have to get them all done? or? should i replace them. the wheels are a 19" option and cost £2000 so i hope i dont have to.

thanks.
