Window Cleaning

Hello all. My first venture away from the general board.

Used to ride a motorcycle with a windscreen, so now I am a window cleaning nut. My used 2004 MCS seemed to have some awful grime, and repeated cleanings would not remedy it, then...

I used Rain-X on the front and rear windows, and it cleaned them up like crazy. Used it on the sunroof as well (this was the dirtiest and hardest to clean) afterwards.

I guess it acts like a cleaning-wax. Definitely worth the Daniel-san time!

Exclamation Proceed with caution...

I used some Rain-X wet wipes to clean the windscreen and all windows. Outside I used their rain repellent stuff and all it did was mess up the wiper blades and leave swirls on the side windows (that I'm still struggling to get rid of more than a year later). Inside I used their anti-mist stuff and whilst it was exceptional during day 1, by day 2 dirt and grime were attracted the the inside of the windscreen and became very difficult to shift. Once I did get the screen re-cleaned with something else, mist was a problem for a very long time until a sufficient number of re-cleans with Windex/Windolene had finally got all the Rain-X stuff off.

I'm told that Rain-X solutions are much better and people have recommended I try them before writing off the whole Rain-X brand, but as pre-packaged wet-wipes... I'd avoid them like the plague.

All the best,
Andrew.

I do the same, the rainx seems to keep a lot more grime off the windows keeping them cleaner.

I use Rain-X on every window unless it has a wiper, mirrors and headlights.

I have the interior stuff too, but have not used it. I originally got them both for my motorcycle helmet, and the anti-fog/mist did not seem to work, though it was not really recommended for the application anyway. May avoid it after your post

I have not had any problems yet with swirling. I found it took a bit of rubbing after the Rain-X dried. We have not had any rain yet, at least not when I am driving.

Well, it depends on what form you have the product in. I'm told the bottled products are much better that the ones I used, as I had all their stuff (including the interior anti-mist product) in 'wet wipe' form - which was a complete disaster.

I'll eventually try the bottled stuff when I get round to it, but I threw away all the wet wipe Rain-X products.

All the best,
Andrew.

Mine are in the small bottles. Maybe I'll try it on a window I don't look out all the time. Then I'll just have to convince the wife to get in the car and help me steam them up... Well, I guess that plan is out!

Rain-X is perfect IF you keep cleaning it and applying it. If you wash the car and don't do it you end up with a smeary windscreen.

I use Autoglym Glass polish on all my windows, it goes on wet, rubs off dry and takes everything off with it.

I think the windscreen wipers on my R56 are pretty poor, so anything that helps keep the screen clean would be appreciated.

Go to Halfords and buy some intensive glass cutter, use the glass cutter to remove all the crap off the glass and then use a glass polish of your choice (i'd use AutoGlym) to keep it clean and unsmeary

True..
I use a clay bar on the glass to remove any bonded contaminants, then AG glass polish followed by 2 coats of (bottled) Rain X at aprox 4 - 6 month intervals on all glass inc' mirrors.

Water beads and flies off the second it lands, frost doesn't stick, you can quite literally clear the windscreen with one swipe - it seems to float above the glass and then come off in a big sheet.

My bottle is 3 years old and still plenty left - applied properly I think it's the best thing you can do for driving safety next to having good tires.

I also change the wipers at the start of Summer/start of Winter - OEM work fine with Rain X.

Cheers, Geoff.

Soap and water...

are all I use to clean my windows. Got the idea from listening to professional window washers (store windows, hi-rise windows). I just wet a clean rag and add soap. Wash the window, then rinse. Cleaner than anything else I've ever used and I've been driving since 1968.

Claybar windows when claying rest of car.

Autoglym glass polish works well, but get white residue in any tiny chips in screen of older cars. But the rain sheets off the screen without the use of wiper blades when clean. Rub wiper blades with it too.

Zymol HD Cleanse is a prewax paint cleaner, but it works very well on glass, harder to remove than autoglym but doesnt leave the residue the same. Dont put on wiper blades!

Turtlewax clearvue, not the retail bottle but the trade stuff supposed to be awesome but hard to put on.

Also Porsche do a window cleaner in a small black scootie bottle, works really really really well, wipe on and off with a clean cloth, doesnt smear at all. Most other sprays are useless tho as they smear the window.
