i have just checked my engine oil and it is almost empty!

need to get some but not sure which one to use? i have a mini cooper s 2002.

am i correct in believing i need 100% synthetic 15W40 engine oil.

someone help! i have no idea which ones are best to use or prices?

You want a fully synthetic oil 0w-30 for your MINI. A safe bet is Castrol Edge which is dealer recommended. FYI, the information you seek is in the owners manual.

i did check that but couldnt find the info - i checked aso the forum FAQs and it suggests fully synthetic 5W30. why do u say 0w 30- sorry just not a topic i know much about but want to find out as much as possible

i have seen castrol edge available so may go and get that

0w is the winter rating and the weight is 30. I use 5w - 30 here in Germany as we don't get as cold as you guys over there. Most of your brethren in the UK are running on 0w-30 hence my recommendation.

Here is the relevant page from the 2002 MCS manual (accessed from MotoringFIle.com). The specifications for the oil should be either on the oil bottle or the relevant manufacturer's website...

Kind of a crummy page. I would ask the service desk what are "acceptable" oils.

Have I got this right? You don't get as cold in Germany as the UK? When I lived in Germany (Munster, Osnabruck, Berlin) it was much colder than England in the winter. Still is I think

I gets cold, but lasts longer there. Also, it is a different climate altogether minus the German coast. Everyone in the UK is running 0w.... Everyone in Germany is running 5w. It is what it is... I'm not a weather man, just recommending what you guys are using. The 0w will keep its viscosity at lower temps which is why the assumption is made.

Barring north-western and coastal Germany there is a Continental climate: warmer summers, colder winters. UK has a temperate maritime climate: rather milder. Honestly, you are missing the point of the thread. He asked what oil to use and was given the recommendation based on his manual and what they are using in the UK.

My apologies if I hurt your feelings over a weather comment that was off.

Time to move on...

Not offended, and I hope you aren't! If the oil meets BMW spec for the engine, and is approved by them, that's all that's needed. However, it was just the climate issue that seemed a little unusual, but its OT really.

went for castrol edge in the end and certainly has done the job - shame about the price!

If any of you are Costco members you get cheap oil there.

Last week went to the Manchester one. 3x1l Castrol Edge fully synthetic 5w 30 for £15 incl vat.
Thats almost 1/2 price.

Also bought Mobil1 0w 40 for my other car at £26 for 4litres

Tip : Dont buy from Halfords!!! I buy from online or Tescos...... When I went to Tescos last for Oil I got 4 litres £6 cheaper!
