What happens if key fob battery dies?

I thought of this last week;

I have an 08 Clubman but I assume the entry systems are similar on other models.

You don't need to even take the fob/key combo out of your pocket and you can operate everything in the vehicle. This is presumably due to the car "sensing" that the fob is "near" and enabling itself. Well, then what happens if the battery in the fob dies?

- You can still get in the car with the physical key, but the car itself does NOT have any sort of "manual" start

The fob does not need any battery power to start the car,when you insert the fob the receiver reads the chip in the fob to release the steering lock and deactivate the immobiliser.Battery power only required for remote functions.

I never insert the fob.... I can... but don't have to.

I'd imagine there's some sort of power necessary for the remote - or is it something like RFID?

I was told the battery is charged when its in the car.

think that's only on the regular fobs, the ones with comfort access don't have rechargable batteries as they aren't normally slotted in to the dash
