Bought my mini cooper 2002 last month but the battery in the key isnt working? I have to manually open the car by inserting the key into the door. How do i change the battery? Ive been told if its coded that it could cost me a fortune to get done at BMW? Help!!

As far as I am aware the battery in the key recharges when it is in the ignition with the engine running.

According to the manual of my 2004 MCS, the key recharges in the ignition switch.

Yeah it should charge itself while in the ignition, it may have got so flat it's lost its coding though. I think there's a way of coding it yourself.....don't quote me on that though.

My owners manual from my 06 R53 says it charges too.

I'm not sure if pre-facelift does, I presume so?

The pre-facelift R50 does not have a rechargeable battery in the key. The battery is a CR2032, replaced by prying open the key (there is a recess inside the keyring hole, put a small scewdriver in there to pry the key open). To initialise the key, turn the ignition to position 2 (ignition on) briefly, then off. Within 10 seconds press the "unlock" (MINI logo) button, then the "lock" button.
This is covered in the owner's manual (page 22 in the North American version).
