I use autoglym vinyl and rubber care for the black bumper trim. I also use it on the tyres when needed and on all my interior plastics.

Theres a load of stuff to learn on how to keep a motor mint, just learning about detailing my self and its an eye opener but once you've covered the basics it actually makes washing faster as well as leaving your car better than new.

Try going on Detailing World - A world for detailers by detailers. top tips and if you really don't have the inclination theres links to guys who will do it for you. Not your usual chaps in tesco carpark though so don't expect to pay 3 quid!!!!.

When I first came across that website a few years ago, it ended up being the most expensive bit of surfing I have done almost!

Went out and got soooo much stuff. Was amazed at how incorrectly you could wash a car and how many amazing products are out there. Im a sucker for trying new products.

Makes washing a car fun, as I get to find out different methods and results.
(after doing that for a few years, I have now got my favourite products which I tend to use each time and it makes me fall in love with my mini as if I was picking it up for the first time again)

Probably a stupid question, but what are 'swirls'? They seem to be highly undesirable from what I've read!!

Still no good weather here to do some MINI bathing

Ford Focus Paintwork Correction & Protection - Detailing World

Swirls = scratches in the surface or clear coat (laquer) on your paint (or in the paint on solids). The light is then relected by the scratches giving you round swirly marks when the car is in direct light, its possible for a shiny car to be swirly and you might not notice until its in the sun but they look terrible, but it is curable (with a bit of time or money) and preventable with a bit of care.

Onve your cars de swirled you'll also notice the finish is clearer, and deeper looking when waxed up and is easier to clean.

To answer your quick detailing Q, you can use it 3 ways.

To spot off nasty bird poop, to clean dust off a car thats already clean (ie you wash it and have a show/wedding the next day but it rains over night/gets dusty) then you can carefully clean it up using microfibre cloths, or best of all to top off after a normal wash to add a bit of shine and make sure theres no water stains like I just have on our Mini.

I managed to get MINI washed up today...but DISASTER!!! I found that there were lots of little white flecks, particularly along the bottom of th car and loads on the rear. When I put water over them they went black and I had to rub each one with a microfibre for it to come off. These black dots would smear, then finally rub off, but there were loads!
When you step back you cant see them, what the hell are they?
My first guess was oil or tar that had been there for a long time and never been washed off, or some kind of spray from certain roads.
Anyway, there were too many to clear off myself as each one required a good few minutes of attention to remove, anyone know of any products that would dissolve these off faster?
Or do I need to go to a specialist who can use machinery to remove them?

Are those quick detailers really good or does it just shine for the moment you have it on then become useless the next day?

I've used a Mequiars one and it was good for spot cleaning.

Meguiars will be good for cleaning off those little spots that I was talking about in my post above?

Which product?

Red Cooper Meguiars Products

I only use Meguiars products. Its important to clay the car to keep the paint surface smooth. Also, keep away from birds, they may damage your paint permanently.

the black dots sound like tar, if they smear. They will not wash off, either a tar remover (Autosmart tardis is a bulk size or Autoglym Intensive Tar Remover smaller amount). Claying removes above surface bonded contaminants that washing wont.

Redmist is a quik detailer (lubricates the surface helpin to prevent any damage), it can be used as a drying aid, helping to remove bird poo or when claying as the QD.

i can personally vouch that DW gets expensive
