Slick 50 Oil Additive

Well every car I have ever purchased I always add slick 50, which is an oil additive, its got liquid ptfe in I think. Basically drain the oil out and you can still drive the car at 50mph and not cease the engine – so they claim. Well as a builder, I tend to abuse my vehicles really bad. The proof for me on the slick is when I had a rover 218 diesel, put slick in as new. 3 years later driving through lanes to Aberwrystwth from Cardiff via Brecon lanes, I developed a water problem and popped the head. My choice was go home, cost £700 in wages or go for it. I drove the next 100 miles as per normal, with all the oil in the water like a grey mousse :-) I thought if the engine ceases so what, buy a new car.

Well it got me there and even back home, had head repaired for £100 all sorted. So I got some faith in that additive. When you put it in, it takes a third out of your temp gauge. So my question is this. Is it fine to put in the Diesel mini. The dealership reckon that it will do more harm than good, yet they’ve never heard of it. Plus it could invalidate my warranty.

My gut feeling is yes it will do good, as it coats moving parts, but then who knows it could coat non moving ie inlets, filter etc which is not so good. I’m probably going to leave it out until the warranty runs out. Has anyone put it in their beauty, what to the enthusiasts or mechanics think? Many thanks :-) MrE

cant offer any advice using it on the mini but ive always used active8.Lee a guy i used to talk to who is a vauxhall nut and had his own garage tunning and so on but he used to track his cav gsi v6 got me into using it, but it looked as tho it worked and did what said on the tin as he did a r&r day testing and seen small improvements on the dyno using it, how accurate it was i dont know but the paper was there with printed on. But i do plan on using it as managed to shut the noisey tappets up on my mk3 astra gsi and my mr2 was a bit noisey to worked on that to.

Slick 50 is snake oil. As long as you keep your oil changes on schedule, you don't need an additive. Save your money and buy some nice mods.

use Slick 50® Diesel Engine Treatment which is specially formulated for diesel engines (got that off the Slick 50 web site). But that being said I would never use it myself! It is pretty thick what will it do when it passes through the injectors? I would imagine most of it gets "sucked" in the oil filter anyhow.

But hey you never know... I did not even know they still made this stuff!

I used these type of products years ago......Molyslip/Slick 50, etc
great in old engines with high mileage.

nowadays I would agree with your dealer that they could do more damage than good in a modern engine such as the Mini.

the engine tolerances are much tighter than they were years ago and that is one of the reasons you need to use the proper recommended oil.

to put a coating in the oilways/bores could be detrimental to the oil flow around the engine.

I would agree with DaFlake's post

ps I remember that they always raised your oil pressure by quite a bit.
