topping oil up

my service is due is 6k miles but reading through my handbook says i can top up my oil if its on low (which it is) reading through the book it states i shoudl use which oil was used in the last service (which it doesnt state) so it says i should use BMW longlife - 01 or would it be ok to go to the local bullseye and look on there books and use there oil?

This topic has been covered numerous times and a simple search would have revealed your answer.

To answer your question, you can select any oil that matches the weight they put in last time. BMW use Castrol Edge and in your region, it is typically 0W-30. Thus, any 30 weight oil can be put in. If you are curious, the 0W is the winter rating not the weight. Winter ratings can be mixed although I recommend you stick to one formula.

in future i will search the forum first (still getting use to it), thanks for your reply however you say the weight typically used is 30 in my area however ive looked at my service receipt and it doesnt state what type of oil was used at all so should i just top it up with the one you recomended above? many thanls simon

The recommended weight by MINI is 30. If the car was serviced by MINI then it will be 30 weight. Halfords carries Castrol and should have Edge. You will be wanting a 0W-30 version of it.
