MINI servicing query

I have a 1st gen MINI cooper (56 plate) and bought it second hand with 7000miles in the clock. I have looked at the service indicator and it says that it will need it's 1st service (hasn't currently had anything done) when it has reached about 15,000 miles. Now the problem is that I only currently do about 4000 miles tops a year so obviously I am not gonna reach the 15,000 for a good long while. So what I am wanting to know is a) will it be a problem not having it serviced for possibly another 2 years? And b) when I press the button on the speedo dial there is another figure that comes up after the number of miles to the service, is this the number of miles left before the brake fluid needs changing? This is currently at 696. Any advice appreciated, ta P.S. I also have the TLC pack on it until 2011.

There is a limit on the years as well. It is either 15000 miles or 1 year (I think, may be 2).

Best to check you manual or call the dealer and ask.

On 1st Generation MINIs, brake fluid and coolant are changed based on build date not mileage:
  • brake fluid every 2 years
  • coolant every 4 years
If you don't put much mileage on your MINI per year, you should not go more than 2 years without changing the oil and filter.

a) The TLC service interval is either 15,000 or 2years whatever comes first. A 56-plate Mini should have had its 1st service already because its over 2 years old. Check your TLC vouchers or service book!
I think the 1st service interval is 9,000 then 15,000 or every 2 years.

b) The button you press on the seepdo is telling you the amount of miles you have done on a full tank etc... you can hold the button down for a second to reset it, when you refill or want to know how many miles you have done in a journey etc...!

Its got nothing to do with the service interval! When you start the engine the figure of how many miles your Mini got left til the next service.

Hope this helps!

the button on speedo when pressed while showing mileage countdown to next service in miles, gives countdown days till brake fluid service not miles done on tankfull, mileage, mph , speed etc all done on switch on steering stalk, re servicing, just check when car was last serviced then,do service on 6 monthly intervals if not using much,

It was registered in October so i guess i would be ok leaving the service a bit longer perhaps? I have also had a look at the TLC stuff and it only says about mileage rather than the number of years before a service is due, but i guess it wouldn't hurt to ask about doing it early. Thanks for the advice.

Ok update ppl. Rang the dealer today and apparently it has already had its first service and brake fluid change (despite them telling me it hadn't had anything done), and it was done by them when they first got the car :0 They obviously didn't think to tell me this (despite me asking when i was thinking about buying it) and the service book and TLC book has not been stamped, so i was right to assume it had had nothing done. But anyways phew, all sorted now!! Just gotta go get the book stamped and i'm done and dusted until its next one. Thanx for everyone's advice anyway, very useful
