Mini clutch

My mini one diesel is in need of a new clutch so I rang the local BMW/MINI dealer and I got a quote of £852. Personally I think they are taking the ****.
So my question is how much have you guys been quoted and can the job be done yourself? (father has automotive engineering degree)

The car has done 54 000miles and is a 2003. Cheers for reading any advise welcome.

If it ain't broke, brake it!
