You can buy the refrigerant and do it yourself, but I don't recommend it. First, often the refrigerant is of a poor quality. Secondly it is not a job that should be taken on buy a person that has no understanding of how an AC works.

As a shade tree mechanic with 20 years of maintenance behind me? No, I would not recommend you do it.

Last time I needed a re-gas (that was on my Merc) it was somewhere in the vicinity of £60..........I would normally avoid Kwik Fit like the plague but apparently they do a deal where they'll do it again if the first time doesn't provide significant improvement..

My S is just over 4 and the AC is very cold (29.5 degrees outside while on the motorway in Belgium yesterday) so I don't subscribe to the "need a re-gas every 2 years" school of thought.
