United-States alternator smells cooked

We have a 2005 Mini Cooper. After starting the car, there is no indication of a bad alternator or battery light. After the car warms up, or it if the air conditioner is on and the radiator fan kicks in, the battery light comes on and the alternator smells like a burnt electric motor. Help, help, help.
