Pure Silver Chrome Exhaust Pipe Cover.....

Just ordered a new exhaust pipe cover from BMW - just wondering if anyones got any fitting instructions? Or if anyones changed theirs - is it difficult?

Thanks,

Kirsti

Does your exhaust pipe have an outward lip on it ? If so then you will probably have to cut the lip off with an angle grinder or hacksaw to get the new chrome cover to fit over it.

I have bought one for my MINI One but haven't yet got around to fitting it.

When I do, I will also make sure that it does not protrude beyond the bumper, because where I park I reverse against a wall. If I accidentally hit the wall I want the pressure to be absorbed by the bumper and not the exhaust system.

I bought mine from ebay.I think that it's genuine MINI. It has a simple grub-screw that tightens against the exhaust. I intend to drill a hole in the exhaust pipe to take the grub-screw. I don't want anybody to just twist it off with their hands.

It should be secured with an allen key type bolt. You do this up tightly so the pressure is on the pipe (don't drill through ). The cover can then only be removed with the allen key

Mine came from Ebay without the allen bolt. The seller did point this out and I found a suitable bolt at home.

My concern is if somebody fancied it for their car...would they be able to steal it by twisting it off with both hands? I'll see how tight I can get it.

Mine is secured with the proper bolt, however, its on that tight its impossible to get it off without the allen key.

I forgot to ask. Did you have to cut any part of the pipe off. If so what did you use and how difficult was it?

My cover definitely needs part of the existing pipe being cut off.

Mine was factory fit, but I have had it off, and the exhaust doesn't have a rolled end. However, the actual pipe didn't look drastically thick so I dare say it'd be fairly easy. Although I wouldn't fancy doing it with the bumper on!!!

What accessory book have you got?

I've checked today (less than 5 minutes ago based on post time), and its £19.95...

Here's a screen thing to show you...

If you were charged £40, I reckon you should get down to the dealer that sold you the part and ask why

where are all these different prices coming from? I noticed that it also depends on the year of the car pre/post 11/06

I hadnt realized that the Op was looking for a 1st gen one ... so deleted irrelevant info...

The original poster was asking about a chrome exhaust cover for a first gen one

These retail at £19.95 as shown in my photo above.

The one you have shown is the accessory tip (NOT CHROME) for the second gen cars. Scrounger was offering the one you have shown, which is not for first gen cars, or chrome.

BMW charge £100ish per hour depending on the dealer.
I'd be surprised if anyone paid to have the cover fitted - its only tightening one box or maybe taking a hacksaw to the end for 5 minutes! You'd have to be mad! The dealers are also well within their rights (and a lot do) to charge for one hours labour whether it takes an hour or not!!!
