In Pakistan its generally run the car until a bit drops off, then see about why it fell off, and then tie it back on, and mind that camel!!

I remember in Egypt, a lot of their cars (ALL of the cars outside of Cairo) looked complete sheds. But their engines sounded really sweet and healthy and pulled very well.
But then I guess petrol & oil is cheap there
