Car on a jack indicator light - help!?

Hello

I've got a 2008 Mini Cooper, which usually runs fine. Today a red warning light appeared while I was driving - a car on a jack. It disappeared again, but did come on when I restarted the engine to come home.

I'm about 250 miles from my usual garage at the moment, and I'm due out in two hours (not far - 40 minute drive each way?) But I can't find this light in my Mini handbook so I'm stressing a bit.

Can anyone advise? The car was serviced in October.

Many thanks,

Elle

Edit - I've just found that it's a vehicle check light. My usual Mini garage have emailed stating not to touch it until Monday, when they'll check it over. They have quoted £400 for the brake pads to be changed.

Is that about right? Can I really not drive it?

(It's my first car, and maintenance isn't my strong point! It is regularly serviced, always passes it's MOT and has new tyres, it's in v.good condition generally. So I'm very concerned!)

If your car was serviced in October your mini dealer would have mentioned brake bad wear I would have thought. Also £ 400 for just pads is crazy, you should have change from £ 400 with pads and discs changed all round. My manual shows a car on a jack and states "vehicle check" and shows mileage so I wonder if the service schedule was not reset after your car was serviced. Also the brake pad wear indicator icon is a different icon.

Normally means a service of some sort is due.
Light means Vehicle check
Display in orange = normal
yellow = service due
red = service overdue
Are there any other lights on in conjunction with the car on lift light above it?

Could be something like brake fluid due for change

Thank you both!

The garage did mention my brake pads were about "half-way worn" but I thought I'd have a while left. Also my dad was pretty convinced they were just trying to sell them to me as I'm female, so I took his advice!

It did have a service light on when I was starting the engine - the garage failed to reset it when they serviced it last time, so a service overdue light would make sense.

That's reassuring! Thanks again.
