Newbie Battery Question

As a first time Mini owner, I've been spending a bit of time just checking things under the hood. Air filter access, oil filter, coolant, etc. I found the battery under a small plastic cover, in what looks like the interior air plenum, on the RHS (looking forward). OK, but there is no way the battery will come out thru that little plastic cover and I can not see any obvious way to remove the battery (if or when the time comes). I know this sounds like a dumb question, but what needs to be removed in order to remove & replace the battery on these cars. (a 2012 Mini hardtop)

Ha ha you were thinking it went in as a flat battery then they charge it up square?
The plastic scuttle cover below the screen, the one with the cover in youre saying removes on that half of the car completely to get it out, also reveals the windscreen wiper mechanism partly too on that side.
