I'll second that motion. At 3300 miles it was as black as night, and there were the typical bits of metal in the filter that you'd assoc. with break-in.

O-Ring around the rosies...

I noticed in photos of the Mini oil pan, that there is a rubber gasket/O-ring between the pan and the oil drain plug. (Or am I seeing things?)

Does this o-ring need to be replaced at every oil change? Also are new drain plugs available at the dealer and what do they cost...just in case....

Thanks. BTW, I have read that thread on how to change the oil, with photos and step-by-step instructions, but there was no mention of this o-ring on the plug.

Thanks,

Mighty Boognish

Oil Change Instructions?

Where were the instructions for the oil change please? I haven't even looked yet (only 1047 miles on my car) but I know of the newer BMWs and Mercedes the oil filters are differrent from the old screw on cannister types I used to change on watercooled VWs... Is the Mini the same? Are there any special tools needed? I want to get a head start on the changes - why take chances with dirty oil?
Sorry for all the questions, perhaps someone has a link to that older thread?
Lastly, what oil are you folks using? I was considering going with Red Line or Castrol Syntex, but I want to keep with the same oil once I start...
Thanks! This is a great forum! nice to see lots of enthusiasm for such a new car.
Very cool.

I found it... Sorry about being lazy!

Did my oil change at 2800km with Redline. Now it's around 4500km. Love the Redline.

I plan to use Redline at the first oil change...at 1200 miles, but on the bottle it says to wait until 3000 miles before using it. Have you used Redline before? I have heard and read good things about the brand and have decided to use it.

No, it's my first time using it. But I feel it is much better than Mobile 1 that I commonly used in my previous cars. Really hard to compare as you will never have 2 cars of same mileage using different ones to compare.
But personally I highly recommend it as I do feel the car runs much smoothly after changing to it.
I guess the recommendation is to make sure all the irregularities are roughed out first before it is changed as Redline is so smooth that it is not suitable for running in. But I think 3000km is enough for me to change.

Thanks for your thoughts.

It's good to know that you noticed the difference when switching to Redline.

I think at 1200 I'll change to Mobile 1 leave it in for another 3000 miles then change again to Redline.

Thought I'd post a pic of the factory oil.

The print is a little small, but it says SAE 5W-30. No indications as to the manufacturer, but it's likely Castrol. API Service grade from back label is SL/CF.

And another of the factory filter.

There have been reports of some US dealerships selling the official MINI oil as cheap as, or cheaper than (!), the common retail prices (WalMart, etc.) for name brand Mobil 1 or Castrol synthetic oil. That's really incredible. If that continues I'll likely buy all oil for my MINI at a dealer.

Chip, if you don't mind me asking, how much did your dealer charge for the oil? (I'm guessing you paid about $7 to $9 for the oil filter?)

I'll have to dig out the receipt for the oil price - it may take until after the holidays before I can find it. I want to say in the $4 range, but I'd have to check to be sure.

I do recall the filter price - $7.54 each (I bought two when I picked up the car). Which I thought was very reasonable. The filter for the ML-320 I used to have was $14, and the VW VR6 filter before that was $10. So quite good, but not as cheap as a Ford or Chevy's would be
