Oil usage -is this normal ?

I've done 3000 miles in my Cooper S, and so far it's guzzled 1 litre of oil. Reading the level isn't easy with that strange dipstick, but even now the level looks low. I'm getting concerned.

The oil warning light has never come on, and every thing feels Ok. The car drives fine.

Is this level of oil useage normal whilst running the car in ? should I get it checked by the dealer ?

I don't know. My dealer warned me that my car might drink a litre or two during the break-in (first 2000km/1200 miles) but it didn't so I thought "good" but they did mention it so perhaps it isn't the end of the universe. By 10000km/6000 miles I did have to add 3/4 of a litre/quart but with such a long oil change interval I'm not surprised.

Still might be wise to have your dealer check it out though or if you are far away add a second litre/quart and if it keeps going down then definitely take 'er in.

I've done 6'000 Km and added less than 0.5 litre (Mobil 1).

I do agree with you, the MCS dipstick is CR@P.... Impossible to read accurately!

Be sure not to overfill it!

>> crap dipstick

Amazingly bad. I never thought I'd be looking for aftermarket dipsticks!

I also used about a noticable amount of oil in 1st 3,000km and find the dip stick worse than useless.

I am now carrying Castol just in case and have noticed that BMW sells oil top up kits (very cute packaging but might be nice Xmas present) because of "the extended distance between oil changes now requires top up"

I have a ONE and at 6000 miles the oil has never moved from the max mark.

Some cars use a bit oil others don't. For piece of mind best to get your dealer to check it.

My 2003 MCS has used about .5 liter of oil in 2800 miles. I'm not surprised - during breakin there will be some oil seepage around the rings, etc. as the parts wear in.

The MC's dipstick is much simpler since it is just a straight stick. No need to snake around but the MCS doesn't have room for a dipstick there with that silly intercooler up top

I also keep a litre of Castrol in the trunk/boot and I check it every time I fill up the gas. Since I added some at ~10000km it has been fine for almost 4000km more (1st oil change in a little more than 1000km more, will be at almost 15000km!).

I've nary used a drop durring the break in period, or until the first oil change ?

It doesn't leak any Oil , and it certainly better NOT be burning any !

My MC used quite a lot of oil in its first 6000 miles, then has used none at all since (15,000 miles).
