"protective" cover/damage

My DS Cooper S has had a mottled effect in one area of the paint, and a body shop guy told me it was the result of peeling off the protective film put on the car for shipping. He said it could be buffed out, but would "take a lot of work". Anyone had this problem, or done a lot of work to correct it?
