Question Oil filter? how to change.

Don't know what happened to my post. so excuse the duplicate.

Sorry to sound stupid but...

I got the oil filter from the dealer in the mail.... and it's not what I expected (one encased in metal which screws on).

Does someone have instructions on how to change the filter and the rubber gasket? Or have a link to a writeup?

Thanks
Ivan

All good except the super crack the seal technique. Explanation:

Back the filter cannister off until you feel the O-Ring slip free. You'll know immediately since it will start to turn much easier.
STOP right there. Go any farther and you'll drain oil all over the back of your engine.
Now go do somethiing for 15 minutes. I always let my oil drain at least that long anyway.

Come back, rag in hand. Hold the rag against the back of the filter with your left hand. Spin off the cannister with your right. If you did it right there'll be less than a teaspoon on your rag and ZERO on your car.

Most excellent tip someone came up with here a long time back. I've used it twice with great success.

PS: I've also used this for between oil change filter change so you don't have to drain the oil for this to work.

United-States Obe,

I have ordered and waiting impatiently for the Fumoto value. Ordered one with a nipple and one without. I will let you know how it works out.

I have not seen better advice anywhere! I so not have a 36 mm socket, so I use a 1 7/16" inch socket I had for the VW axle nut! Everything else is the same! You must push the new filter in the cup and push it again to get it in place! I also would prefer a Cartridge filter!

1 7/16 = 36.5 mm. Seems okay to me (couse it must be since the V-dub wasn't SAE either )

Hey I may have something new to add to the procedure.

I did mine without jacking up MINI!

Just slid the drain pan underneath and pulled the plug (I was really glad for the pictures, I had a hard time figuring out which was the sump).

Since you do the filter from the top anyway it was a breeze.

I used the *crack* method to great success. It was a little tough getting the filter housing started again. I was terrified of cross-threading it. Turns out that you need to get it to the O-ring then apply faith and torque in equal measures!

For the record I used Castrol Syntec which I found for $4/qt at a discount auto chain.

This is the method I have always used with this type of filter... a top notch tip... BUT
