Testing Oil Level

OK, so it's easy - but the manual says, when explaining about the ONE and Cooper only (the MCS isn't mentioned) that the level should be between the two notches. But on the MCS dip stick there aren't any.

There's a sorta mottled effect on the yellow piece at the end. Presumably the level shouldn't be below or above the ends of this. Any agreement?

Yep. Just keep it on the textured part. And bring your magnifying glass for the wee hole.

This is the dumbest dipstick I have seen. It is a real pain to read.

It is almost worthwhile letting your oil get dirty just so you can see if you have any in there

Stange you bring this subject up, I was thinking today after trying to check my oil how odd the dipstick indicators are. As the other replys say the oil should be on the mottled yellow plastic part with the two small indentations / holes top and bottom indicating 'max' and 'min'. I think Mini could do better with the S dipstick (what a subject !!),

Cheers,

Well I'm glad YOU brought it up. I thought it was just me (being a girlie and all).

I think that the problem may be that it is a 'BMW' dipstick. Just look at the BMW cast into the handle

Personally I think it was made that color to "AVOID" showing it's true color! Imagine if it was white and we saw this black oil! This way, it neder looks that bad! A lot of dip sticks are now Black also! Gone are the light steel color sticks!
