Check the oil level on the dipstick regularly (every other week, every third week... whatever). If its low, top it off. When you turn the key on in the ignition, the odometer flashes the distance to next oil change. For more info, turn to the owner's manual as it is a valuable resource.

"Topping up" means just that - checking the level on the dipstick and adding as necessary. Should do this ideally every time you stop for fuel, or at least every other time. Check it after you fill the tank so the oil has time to drain down into the oil pan so you read the level accurately on the dipstick.

"Oil change" means drain ALL the old oil out of the drain plug in the oil pan and, for most people, change the oil filter. If you have never done this before, have someone who is knowledgeable help you do it the first time. The oil filter on the MINI is not like most other cars, check the FAQ/DIY info here for some good tips on how to handle the fllter and oil change in general. You can save a lot of $$ by doing oil changes yourself (vs. dealer's charge) and you will know it's done right (if you know what you are doing). Make sure you use Castrol or Mobil 1 full synthetic motor in the viscosity MINI specifies for your climate.
