Magnetic Oil Drain Plug ?

I have just been reading about a magnetic oil drain plug which will collect all the metal shavings that come off the engine, mainly during breakin period. Does anybody know if these are worth buying and where you can get them from for the MINI ?

Not as effective as you'd think. Most of the components in modern engines are alloys. Specifically non ferrous metals. Magnet won't do much, if anything.

If I was to change the oil after say 1000 miles would that get rid of the shavings from the engine ?

I think you're just a weee bit paranoid about this. It's not like there are large iron filings floating around your oil. If this was seriously a problem during breakin, wouldn't the service interval be 1,000 miles, then every 12,000 after that?

Right. Just calm down and motor on, and everything will be fine.

Took delivery on 10/09/2003.

Mmmm.... Dark silver.

might do a little bit. i always had one on my 82 rabbit, and at every oil change, there was a
coating of grey (iron) dust stuck to the magnet. probably a drop in the bucket, though, compared
to non-ferrous, silica, dust, dirt, etc. that also find their way suspended into the oil.

Right or wrong I changed mine at the end of break in. Again at 2500 miles then 5K. Filter only at 7500. There was a good amount of metallic particles in the oil at first change. No analysis done, just looked at it under a microscope. By 5K it was greatly reduced.
Excessive? Maybe. My choice? You bet.

Yea thanks for the reply's people. I know it sounds pretty paranoid but I don't see what harm changing the oil after about 1500 miles will do and it will almost cost nothing so I might aswell.

We've been down that road before.

I concurr with obehave. That is what you have a filter for.

We've had numerous discussions about this before. I suggest doing a search on

I don't think you should go past the thread... anyone waiting 10k?? to start with.

Good luck

Doesn't all Minis and modern cars have that. I know when I changed the oil on my Mini Cooper S it had one fitted.

If you would really like a magnetic drain plug, try this when you change the oil:
Take the drain plug, get a 2-3 foot length of insulated wire, wrap the threaded end of the bolt, get some alligator clips, attach the clips to each of the stripped ends of the wire, and hook the other ends of the clips to a small battery; leave for a couple of hours, instant magnetic plug-well not instant, but close. Make sure you dont use a magnetically shielded wire.

What size battery are you suggesting (please give an example )
