How do you clean a JCW becuase of Scoop?

Hi all,

My new JCW S is now very dirty after 550 miles since getting it on Monday ;-)

One thing is bothering me - how the hell do you get it cleaned because i have heard that getting water into the air scoop over the supercharger is a recipe for disaster?

Apparently BMW do not cover any warranty claims for people that have jet washed their cars and have gotten water down the supercharger air vent!

Any ideas as unfortunatly I do not have he means to clean the car myself as i dont have a drive way.

Its a strange one and i cant find any posts about this.....

Umm, does this also apply to the S models?

I've washed my car normally for a year and a half and nothing has ever happened, I wouldn't worry, unless something is different witht he JCW supercharger?

Water will not enter the supercharger through the air scoop. If this was the case, then none of us would be driving our Cooper S' in the rain. =)

The scoop directs cool air over the intercooler. The intercooler is sealed and functions just like a radiator. The hot compressed air travels from one end of the supercharger, is cooled, and then released out the other end to the engine. You can spray cold water on the intercooler all day long with the engine running and not harm the engine.

Wash your car to your hearts desire. You won't have any problems. =)

Umm, all the scoop "leads" to is the intercooler, not to the "supercharger air vent"..... You're getting worked up for nothing.

Thanks guys - according to my local dealer specialist cars they have had 3 cars in where people have jet washed down the vent and have caused damage to their intercoolers.

Apparently small amounts of water are ok - i.e. rain - but large amounts in quick bursts like a jet wash are a problem.

I agree with you guys but surely they wouldnt make this up for no reason?

The spray could quite easily bend the fins of the intercooler reducing it's effectiveness.
You could also lodge objects deep into the fins as well.

They also recommended never driving through massive puddles as they may also have the same effect with large volumes of water coming through!

Different issue.
There seems to have been instances where the front intake opening ingests water and floods the intake path.

thanks, still getting used to the different terms. I can see now why that might be bad, bending fins etc. Brutus gets a "jet washin" every once and awhile, I will be careful.. take it easy guys, time to leave work. hehe
