Offline | Hi all, Today I went for my 30,000km inspection. All was good as I expected. They changed the breaks oil, coolant and engine oil (+filter and cap) and for some reason my car was listed in the computer for a "replace of the acoustic insulation of the engine" which was done for free. (which was great, as it was getting a touch black and dirty and now its all new and clean). Now, my 2 year warranty ends on the 15th of May, so I have a question as I do not want to find myself on the 16th of May with a new problem: They changed the complete engine oil to Mobile 1 - 0w/40. Now I am in Israel, and the summer here can get really hot. isn't 0w/40 more suitable for a cold or cooler climate? will this oil actually provide the BEST performance? I am not worried at all about fuel consumption (which I know this oil is great for), and all I care about is keeping the engine at best condition while getting the best performance out of it. I just need a simple answer to this. There is loads of information on this board and on the net about oil .. which has really just confused me. so simple is easy ![]() Thanks for your help. By the way .. since day one I have always had a problem with the reverse gear. it normally doesn't go into that gear easily but I have never actually taken care of it. (why? no idea...) but today I was told during the inspection and after they verified there is a problem: that BMW will be changing my complete gear box and everything related for free as a result (as nothing can be done to "tweak" it). I will be dealing with this next month. so I am glad .. as a new gear box is always good. After two years I am glad to say I am super happy with my mini cooper. Other than this reverse gear issue - the car has been near perfect. I have had zero problems really. Only thing I hate about the car is the amount of little noises coming out from all kind of places inside the car while driving . But I guess you can't ask for everything ![]() Again: thanks for your help. Just want to make sure I got the best possible oil for my car. if needed: I will replace all .. but just want to know Lorien |

| Amiga 500 to PS3 20 Years | Well i would reply but I don't know. What I do know is that a lot of dealers do use a different oil and I've heard of others using 0w40 before. I think 0w40 does aid cold starting because the oil is thinner when cold than say a 10w40 but once the oil is heated it has the same thickness providing the last number is the same. The numbering is all due to how many inches the oil will travel downwards on a stick in a minute at two different temperatures i think or how long it takes to travel a meter, Can't remember now Hopefully others will chime in now and confirm or deny what I have said ![]() ![]() It was acceptable in the 80's Last edited by Root Ginger : Mar 14th, 2004 at 11:44 AM. |

Offline | Don't know either to be honest. Sure there are threads on here already that discuss the various properties, and pros and cons of various engine oils. There aint no party like my nana's tea party |

Offline | I'm not sure about an answer either but I'm sure I'm going to ask the same type of question when my warrenty is almost up. Hopefully you got everything taken care. Especially since it's Sunday night here and Monday 3-15 morning there. Since you're in the future it can't hurt to ask for the winning Lottery numbers? |
