Would you change your oil now....?

I'm about two trips to work away from completing the run-in period on my new mini ONE.

I am contemplating changing the oil but I'm really undecided on whether or not it is necessary.

My brother is an engineer who makes hydraulics and he recommends that I do change the oil because of all the little bits that a new engine inevitably gets.

Surely the oil filter catches any bits? If oil needed changing wouldn't BMW recommend this?

Results of poll will make my decision for me!

I had mine tested after waiting 10,000 miles on the first change. Here's a very long thread about the whole thing:

You can also check my gallery for the actual test results. Basically, it said the oil was still fine for continued use.

I am just going to follow what BMW/Service Indicator recommends, I'm sure they know best.

I agree if you drive it to the limit most of the time I would do the same. But for 90% of people I think the service intervals will be fine.

As marrsbar drives a ONE without SC, and he doesn't say he rags it, personally i would wait. But if you fell more confortable changing the oil, go for it. It won't do any harm after all

Hopefully an idiot driving like a banshee everywhere at 6,900 rpms would soon be off our roads by legal or mechanical breakdown means as soon as possible.

Just my 2p worth

nope there has never been one single shred of evidence showing it does anything but waste money, oil and time and add to enviromental pollution.

I agree with Gene. Honest John from The Daily Telegraph recommends leaving the initial oil in situ until the first service to allow the engine to "wear in". Then he recommends more frequent changes after that.

But if you are only going to keep the MINI for 3 years then don't bother to change the oil. It's only worth having frequent changes if you intend to run the car into the ground.

I agree. Dirty oil for the first 10k miles will help the engine bed in. Then if you intend to keep the car, change the oil every 5 to 7.5k miles using mobil 1 or castrol slx.... costco do mobil1 quite cheaply... under £30 I think....
