Rear brakes Hi, was just wondering if anyone has had their rear brakes wear out before the fronts? This has just happened to me. Also it seems that the inside pad wears out quicker than the outside pad on the rear of my car. Does this sound like a brake adjustment problem? Thanks

I just replaced my rear brakes at 14.5K miles. The fronts aren't even half worn. The inside pads were even more worn than the outers. I guess its because of the self-adjusting handbrake cable applys pressures to that side more. Trust not the heart of a man for whom old clothes, and the Mini, are not venerable!

Stuck calliper Mine goes in tomorrow to have the rear brakes sorted. I did not like the looks of the rear disks so I took the wheels off to have a closer look. I found that the N/S inboard pad is worn to "wafer thin" while the outer pad is just about as new thicknesss. It will be changed under warantee, of that I am sure. The disks are still above min thinkness, but the outer part of the swept area is very poor, more so on the O/S. I want new disks too. My Oct 01 Cooper has 18K miles on it. Tonight the windscreen started leaking again for the 4th time, I have only had the car 7 months

The rears should NEVER wear out before the fronts, this is an impossiblity without some mechanical problem being the cause. If your rears have worn unevenly, it means the calipers have seized, and it should be a warranty job, new pads, new disks (they will also wear unevenly) and new calipers. Happened to me at 25k miles, rears started to make a noise, inside rear pads had worn away completly, damaging the disk. When asked by the dealer how often I had changed the front pads, I pointed out that I had not, and that if the rears were worn then the car was faulty. After scratching their heads a little, they agreed, and replaced the lot inder warranty. I then pointed out that the car had just been serviced by them 2 weeks before, and asked why they hadn't spotted the uneven wear - wait for this, your not going to believe it - they check the pad wear out without removing the wheels - duh! Seems they measure the caliper gap with the wheels on, thus not seeing uneven wear (the pads only wore out one side). All to save 5 minutes service time. Well, you've got to ask, is this safe practice? After having a service on my car, I would at least expect them to be able to assure me my car was safe to drive. I wonder, if we were paying for service, rather than TLC, would they take the wheels off and check (thus costing us more in service costs?)
