Anyone replaced their shocks?

Has anyone replaced his/her shock absorbers? My understanding is that, under normal driving conditions, they should be good for at least 50k miles. My question is this: do the replacement shocks give your car a softer ride? My 02 MC, with Sport Suspension, has the firmer riding oil filled shocks which I don't like. Also, how much does a set of new shocks cost?
