Offline | I would just stick with 5w-30 unless it is giving you problems. From what I understand 40 is thinner. ITs probably making more noise from it being thinner and not flowing as thick as say the 30 was. If concerns you switch back. |

Offline | Give it a try I dont think extreme damage will be done using different weighted oil. As long as there is oil. But also bear in mind most mechanics will tell you whatever oil they have on hand is the best for your car. If its 10w-30, 5w-30, or 15w-40 that will be the best for your car and their filters are always just as good as whatever filter you ask for. ![]() |

Offline | Are you using a fully synthetic oil? I can't imagine changing twice a week with the cost of synthetic. 40 weight oil is thicker than 30 and won't flow as freely in the cold. richmds is right, the mechanic will try to sell you what he has on hand. Stick with full synthetic Castrol/Mobil1/etc 5W-30 if at all possible. MINI wouldn't recommend that weight unless they had a particular reason. His - 04 CR/W MCS Hers - 05 BEP/W MCS |

Offline | however..i had checked the mobil website in aus....they only provide 0w-40, or10w-50......there is no mobil1 3w-30 in aus(i think)........anyway it cost me aus$250(us$100 i guess) for this week(twice oil change...)...waste of money........ |

| MINI2 Senior | ok.......... changing oil twice a week does seem crazy............ i change my oil around every 5000kms... since i dont like changing every 20000kms and that i reckon its better to change more often due to track days, and many short trips........ anyways.. i have always been using 0w-40 oil (mobil 1, castrol, etc) and never had a problem... (unless when changing oil at the dealer..) 05 PW/B chilli. finally here. |

Offline | 5W40 5W means oil viscosity at cold temperatures or simply W for winter temperatures. 40 means oil viscosity at normal engine running temperatures 5W40 or 10W40 both have similar oil viscosity at normal engine running temperatures. however at cold temperatures 5W40 has a lower viscosity than 10W40. Therefore when starting a cold engine, the 5W40 would have lesser resistance. Lower viscosity ratings equates to minimal resistance as well as minimal engine wear protection. Mobil 1 0W-20 is the lowest viscosity rating oil I have found so far. York Street Richmond Victoria Australia |

Offline | This thread seems to have gone off on a tangent. I am on the only one who read that to mean an oil change "twice this particular week" due to the wrong weight oil being installed earlier in the week? + 2002 MINI Cooper S - Dark Silver / White roof, Sport, Premium, Lapis blue leather + 1965 Mini Traveller - Tartan Red / White roof, 1275, Cooper S discs, fully restored/renewed |
