Paint Sealants - Good or Bad?

I take delivery of my new baby on December 10th.

The dealer has advised a Supagard paint sealant treatment (3 yr protection).

Are sealants worth it?
If so, what's the best brand?
Can you use other products on top of them?
If sealants are bad, what is better?

Have tried other threads on this but they seem inconclusive.

Hi NIRLN,

I wouldnt bother with any paint sealant from your dealer as he will rip you off. I bought some DIAMONDBRIGHT paint sealant off E-bay for £26 and used it on my MAZDA. I then did the Cooper S with Maguires Gold Class wax about £12 a bottle followed by a couple of coats of Autoglyn Extra Gloss about £8 a bottle over the Meguires wax and there was no comparison with DIAMONDBRIGHT which was nothing special. The dealer will use either DIAMONDBRIGHT or SUPAGUARD and charge you a fortune. Your best just buying a good quality wax like Maguires and do your pride and joy every 6 to 8 weeks. Personally I wouldnt want to leave waxing the MINI for 3 years......these paint sealants are a lazy way out. You get much more satisfaction spending a couple of hours on a Sun shining it up yaself.

Hope that helps.

It's a dealer mark-up rip-off.

Well that seems pretty conclusive!

And thanks for the product advice, Penguinblue. Only problem is, I live in Scotland, so the chances of me getting to shine my baby up in the sunshine every 6-8weeks, are almost nil!

One last thing - Jet washes - avoid 'em?
Some people think they're good for getting salt off the undercarriage.

I'd say for getting salt/ice buildup off the undercarriage you'll be OK. Anything with paint you care about, no.
