Filter Change

I've been told by a very good mechanic that the typical filter is fouled (and therefore bypassed) after 3000 miles. He recommended that I replace the filter every 3000 miles and keep the balance of the synthetic oil for the full 10000 mile service interval. Any comments?

Change Filter and Not Oil?

Just like you, I listen to what experienced mechanics have to say. The problem is they don't all agree and frequently they don't agree even with themselves.

One very experienced mechanic told me to change the filter every other oil change. Some say to change the oil every 3000 miles, others say 5000 miles. The whole synthetic thing has the mechanical community in an uproar. Some say once you go to synthetic, you can never go back to regular oil. Someone told me synthetic in my motorcycle would make the clutch slip.

I really don't think that is the group to look to for consensus about taking care of a car that breaks as many rules as Mini does.

Call your service department and ask them.

opinion will vary

it will not hurt to change it more often. it is always best to change the filter when you change the motor oil. the quality of the oil and filter will deriorate with time as you use it. therefore, it's ablility to protect your engine will deriorate the longer you use it. the only that will hurt when you change it more often is your wallet, because you have to buy more oil and replace the filter more frequently. most people will agree with changing the oil at 3000 miles is the best bet.
