You should always change the filter when changing the oil. I use Mobil 1.

Heya mate. You can change the oil without the filter, but you are leaving old contaminated oil and whatever nasties are in the old filter in the fresh oil with

I think most dealers here use Mobil 1. However there are several alternatives such as castrol RX. Shell helix ultra is a well priced alternative. Whatever you choose it has to be 100% synthetic, and you should stick to it. If the dealer is changing your oil for you, you should either provide them with your oil or use whatever they use

Actually Mobil 1 tests better than the questionable Syntec we get here in the States.

No such thing as "questionable" Synthetics being sold in the US. Castrol's products are just as valid as Mobil's and are actually endorsed by MINI.
Moi....I use whatever the dealer puts in cuz I've already paid for it.......
If you want to put in a reccomended oil then go for the synthetic brand of your choice that bears the credential "BMW LL1" or "L1" on the can. Only those oils have passed the tests required by BMW for use in the MINI engine. If you change grade say to a 10W or 20W expect to see a drop in fuel economy.
