Changing oil on a Cooper S

Ladies and Gents, since I like to do my own service, I'd like some input on changing oil. First let me say, I bought my car used so I don't have the manual (although I will obtain one soon) Second, if there has already been a discussion about this, which wouldn't suprise me, kindly lead me that way.

I would like to change my own oil but don't know the specifics on the service indicator. I assume if I change my own oil, the service indicator (which I don't know anything about) will light up eventually. So is there anyway I can reset this when it comes on and what is the recomended oil service interval? I have already found the filters can't be found at my local Autozone so I guess I have to go to the dealer (thank goodness I am a BMWCCA member and get at least a modest discount).

Also, what is the oil capacity? I've heard 5 QTs.

Ever hear of:
a) Owners manual?
b) the site's Search capability?

Damn that didn't take long to get a smart ass reply. I thought this site would be different. Two days and I'm already disapointed.

Notice I stated "I don't have an owner's manual yet".. Thanks for the useless reply dude.

It wasn't a smartass reply, he's correct.

All of that information is available by performing a search here, including the Owner's Manual.

Give the search function a shot, you'll like it.

BTW, YOUR reply was smartass. Take it easy, you'll find this a very friendly place if you're nice

He may be correct but when you start a comment with, "Ever hear of", your bound to at least ruffle a feather or two. It's all good, I was really just being lazy and didn't want to search right now but I can do that.

And you're right, my comment was smart ass.

Many of the how-tos are in PDF format under the "techinical" section of this web site.

The glovebox manuals can be found in PDF format on this site or at MotoringFile, see right hand side.

Enjoy.

This is typically a really great group of people who are on this site.

Sorry you got started off on the wrong foot, but welcome. Hopefully we (yourself and all us other correspondents on this site) will all try to do a little bettter next time to try to avoid a misunderstanding.

Cool, it's all good. Thanks for all the responses. I've found some cool stuff in the "search" so far. You are all right, this site seems great! I found my service indicator reset stuff, now I need to find that PDF owner's manual and I'll be all set.
