I asked this question before, but never really got an answer, so I'll try again.

I am considering getting the rain sensing wipers but am wondering if replacing a cracked or broken windsheild will become an expensive maintainence cost. Is the sensor inside the glass itself, or does it attach to the inside of the glass? Any knowledge around this would be helpful in deciding if the $140 option is going to cost me hundreds more in the future.

Rain sensors are not intergrated into the glass. They usually sit on the widscreen infront of the rear view mirror, hence the auto-dimming mirror comes with the rain sensor as they are housed in the same unit.
Whether or not this option will ever become available is a mystery. My dealer informed me that the BMW boffins still can't get it to work porperly and they don't even have an estimated release date yet

I didn't know that this option was a problem. It's been several months since I specced my S and it wasn't an issue then. Going in this weekend to "check up" on the progress of the order, I'll be sure to ask about the wipers. Thanks again for the info.

I am a high tech sort of guy, but I have NEVER been able to figure out the purpose of rain sensing wipers! I NEVER turn on my wipers at the first sign of rain. Here in the desert the windscreen needs a good washing BEFORE you start the wipers!
