Tree sap - anyone got tips on getting it off?

I have a number of small spots of tree sap on my roof, windscreen and bonnet. Does anyone know of anything that will get rid of it???

Any help will be much appreciated.

Thanks,

Hazel.

What we did

Maybe not the easiest solution but we got a clean white cotton cloth and rubbing alcohol. It worked well, just slow going.

I take it the rubbing alcohol was ok on the paintwork? I'm worried because although the roof is white, the rest is black-eyed purple, and I don't want to do anything to the paint - particularly on the bonnet where it'll be really noticeable.

A chainsaw seems tempting though - shame the trees might fall on the house!!!

No problem with paint

We didn't have any problem with the paint. It was white on a chevy so weren't quite as worried about it as if it were a mini. If you use the chainsaw, make sure it doesn't land on the MINI, that would be quite a bit worse than sap on the paint

Thanks for your help guys - just read a thread from last year that recommended Meguiar's Clay so I've ordered that - hopefully it will do the trick!

I've used alcohol for years with no ill affects.
Make sure you at least spot wax afterwards though.

WD40 left to soak does quite a good job of breaking them down...but then you need to get rid of the wd40...it mixes with screen wash to make an almost milky solution so a good clean is necessary afterwards. There are also bug/tar removers which have an effect. Elbow grease with a soft cloth and a fingernail behind it seems to be the only way.

where i have to park at work is a losing battle with my current car...in this weather the drips are solid by the time i get back to it...the new one is going to be covered at work...which is a nause.

United-States You should...

...remove the majority with the 70% rubbing alchohol (jut removes the sap and surface wax) and then get the remainder with the clay... That should get it.

Rewax the area afterwards first with a cleaner wax... and finish with Carnauba...

Clay will scratch your finish if you neglect to use an emolient solution to irrigate the area you are working on.

PS... Short of actually buying a chainsaw... get a fitted all-weather car cover for the car !

It is not how fast you go, but how you go.

I read the same thing - ordered mine and it didn't seem to work. Infact, I think it actually probably scratched the car more. Wasn't impressed with it...

Actually butter works amazingly well to remove tree sap. Easily removed with regular washing solution when you are done.

The key to clay not leaving marks is to follow the directions and liberally keep the area lubricated with a detailing spray.

Checked out autopia recently? Sonus have now brought out a super fine clay which they claim won't even remove your wax - but will still remove bonded contaminents!!

Now that's clever!!

My solid black mini one is parked under an oak tree for 24 hours a day every day

I just clean it once a week and it gets all the tree sap off
When i clean the car the paint is so rough it feels like sand paper
