Hello.

I've had my mini cooper 05 for about a month. A few days ago, I noticed a very scary sound+vibration.

I start my car, lower my emergence brake, put the shifter into reverse, then as I ease off the brake pedal and clutch, i hear a frightening whirl sound, combined with an intense vibration in the clutch knob.

The closest thing I can imagine is a spool unravelling very fast, or letting a toy car's windup wheels loose in the air.

This has happened about 60% of the time since then. I cringe until the whirling ruckus and vibration stops, then continue pulling out.

What is going on?!?!

I think you're not in gear. I do the same thing in my MINI sometimes when shifting into reverse.

I think you may be right. Pressing the clutch fully, making sure the shifter is completely in reverse (I feel two notches or 'clicks'), I didn't have that problem.
