That pricing structure reminds me when i worked in a Nissan Dealer, the oil filter tool (just a metal ring with a nut on it) was about £50 !!

Is it because they buy it from Snap-on?? I have heard they are expensive, but dont you get lifetime warranty with that? Maybe worth checking

Its because they dont want you to buy it - they'd rather you paid them to do it Thats pretty much what i was told when i was looking for the tool to undo the top strut nut without resorting to an impact gun.

(BTW Max, getting coilovers and new discs / pads all round fitted Saturday Rear pads completely disintegrated at Brunty - didnt even realise til i got back! )

Its a simple compression tool that fits inside the brake caliper and you wind it up with a socket BMW tool number 34-1-050

Cost?

£158 less VAT

Now, would anyone from BMW/MINI care to comment on this pricing?

Thanks in anticipation

Similar tools from Ford and even VW cost a fraction

Max

Tell you what, we have a number for a local snap-on guy i will try to talk to him and see how much they charge for one of their tools. It might be a good investment if you are planning to change the pads more often than expected. And with the price the dealer charges you could probably make back the cost in a couple of pad changes.

Hobzy also has a valuable point, thats just because they want to make money on you.... on something that is a very simple job if you can hold a spanner.

ok just changed my rear pads dealer wanted £250 to change front and rear at last service
pad with sensor on is worn most at 3mm but not to sensor yet the rest have pleanty on
you do not need specal tool only long nose plyers to turn the piston clockwise whilst pushing it in i hope this is the corect way as they do not budge otherwise
i have also removed my eibachs now as a canot cope with the ride now i have 16" slites with runflats hope this helps
the best place to get torque wrench is argos £14.99 or £10.75 from screwfix it is the same one

Replaced front and rear pads with EBC Greenstuff. I tried the needle nose pliers on the rear pistons, with no luck (more like no patience!), so I made my own tool out of a 3/8 drive 11/16 socket. I used a bench grinder on it and left 2 opposite tabs that fit in the holes in the pad and used a ratchet and extension to turn and push at the same time. Much easier!

(I tried to post a picture, but my file is too big and Picture Trail is down - maybe later)
